Critical Incident Leadership
PDI Course Title:
POST Name of Course:
Critical Incident Leadership
Critical Incident Management
Course Description:
This is a CA POST Certified professional development course. It will consist of two (2) consecutive 8-hour days. Attendees successfully completing this course will receive 16 hours of POST CPT credit.
This Critical Incident Leadership course develops and improves a student’s critical decision-making skills. In other words, this course will teach you how to think in chaos.
The course utilizes direct instruction, facilitated discussion, and small group exercises to develop principles, strategies, and cognitive thinking skills which then may be applied to any number and types of incidents the student may encounter during their career.
This course develops students’ abilities to apply the principles outlined by author Sid Heal in his books Sound Doctrine (2000) and Field Command (2012). Students apply the principles learned to actual critical incident case study scenarios through decision-making exercises. The course design incorporates elements from the Community of Inquiry theoretical framework (Garrison, 2015), which promotes critical thinking through collaborative problem solving and focused interaction. The course design also includes aspects of situated learning theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991). Situated learning theory proposes that learning takes place in environments where learners move from a novice to advanced understanding of a subject matter through interaction with experts in a community of practice. This course also integrates components of cognitive apprenticeship found in situated cognition theory (Brown, Collins, & Duguid, 1989). Cognitive apprenticeship presents that experts scaffold novices’ learning through social interactions that lead to shared skills, methods, traditions, and experiences.
